Primary Schools

We are now talking to Primary Schools about getting involved in 2017/18.

From September 2016 to March 2017 six Oxford Primary Schools were involved in the Primary Playmaker project. Each child wrote a play and eleven were chosen to be performed by professional actors at the Oxford Playhouse. Nazarene Williams and Ollie Gomm perform below in The Great Fire of Oxford.

    • St, John Fishers, Blackbird Leys

    • St, Michael’s, Marston

    • Bayards Hill Primary, Barton

    • East Oxford Primary,Cowley

    • Windale Primary, Blackbird Leys

    • New Hinksey Primary, Hinksey

Primary Playmaker encourages children to create their own short plays through a course of one and a half hour workshops in which children experience a variety of activities including improvisation and writing exercises.

Topics to be explored during the workshops include:

[list type=list-2]

      • Creating characters and dilemmas

      • Setting the scene

      • Story boarding the plot

      • Rehearsing the dialogue

      • How to lay out a script

      • How a director works with actors to bring a play from page to stage

The course leader, Renata Allen, can either work round a theme particular to a school’s literacy project or enable the children to create original plays based entirely on their own ideas.

At the end of the writing process, pupils rehearse their plays and present them to each other or to an invited audience at school.

Some of the plays from each school are then selected to be performed by professional actors at the Oxford Playhouse in a festival of Young People’s theatre in March. All participating and interested schools are welcome to attend this performance.
